A FREE BRIEFING FOR CURIOUS PARENTS

Kids, AI & the feed.

What is shaping children's digital world right now, and three small things your family can do this week.

READ TIME: ABOUT 4 MINUTESFACTS, CONTEXT & A LITTLE REAL-WORLD FUN

The online world moves fast. Parents do not need another alarm bell. They need a clear view of what is changing, where the evidence comes from, and a good place to start. Here are three signals worth your attention this month.

01

THE NEW HOMEWORK QUESTION

When AI gives the answer, who did the thinking?

In an August 2026 survey, Common Sense Media found that 70% of US teens had used AI for schoolwork. The question for families is not simply whether a child used a tool. It is whether the child can explain an answer in their own words and check it against another source.

Try this tonight

Ask: “Show me one answer you got from AI. How would we check it, and what would you say differently?” Keep the tone curious.

02

THE REAL-OR-FAKE MOMENT

That incredible video might never have happened.

Ofcom's May 2026 UK research found a gap between some teenagers' confidence in spotting AI-generated content and how well they identified a test image. A quick pause before sharing can turn an uncertain clip into a useful conversation.

Try this together

Pick one surprising image or video. Ask who posted it first, whether another trusted source confirms it, and what clues might be misleading. You can say “I am not sure” together.

THE LAGOS FAMILY CHECK-IN

Make the online conversation a family habit.

UNICEF Nigeria encourages adults to talk openly with children about online experiences, review privacy settings together, limit oversharing, and make room for offline activities. Those small habits can be more useful than a single dramatic rule.

Try this weekend

Let your child choose one game or activity to teach the family. Then ask them to show you one app, video, or online trend they enjoy. Take an interest before setting a boundary.

ONE MORE THING TO TRY

Turn the feed into a real-world quest.

Ask your child to choose a safe, age-appropriate idea they saw online, then make your own version together using what you have at home. A dance, a drawing challenge, a cardboard invention or a family game all count. Let them lead the fun.

Adapt the activity to your child's age and supervise where needed.
